Excerpt

The project focuses on Chengdu LUXELAKES eco-community’s water environment, exploring how to promote the public awareness of water ecology, engage residents and visitors in water resources preservation, reduce the management cost and improve the willingness to pay, and finally establish a new, sustainable life style through the digital community engagement platform. The research-based design proposal is based on big data extraction and surveys and interviews with residents and visitors to support the design and development of LikeLake interactive platform.

Challenge 1. Multi-Usage Conflicting Interests

Water as a shared resource is subject to conflicting uses by different stakeholders. Some of the clashing interests include water’s scenic visual value against its ecological services and its space as a transportation artery against recreation venues. This multi-usage problem has increased the difficulty of water management.

Challenge 2. Long-term Financial Gap for Maintenance

The current water maintenance cost, which amounts to 60 million CNY per year, will no longer be sustained in ten years as the developer withdraws its financial support. How might the Luxelakes community continue to maintain water quality and activities?

Problem Statement

How might we raise the awareness of the water ecosystem, enhance the people-water association, and encourage bottom-up water-sustainable behaviors to the lake, such that to serve the long-term lake management goals?

Solution: LikeLake Eco-Community Water Platform

Likelake is a community engagement platform that aims to promote active participation in sustainable water system management by raising residents’ and visitors’ awareness of the water system in Luxelake and instilling socio-ecological knowledge about the lake through human-nature interaction.
